Florida Association of Black Chambers of Commerce hosts third annual Black Chamber Day

On February 5th, 2024, the Florida Association of Black Chambers of Commerce hosted its third annual Black Chamber Day at the Capitol.

The attendees were welcomed with a reception and performance by a live band, Tallahassee Nights, and then started their day of advocacy on February 6th.

Empowering business minds

Shaheewa Jarrett Gelin, Esq., the founder of the Florida Association of Black Chambers of Commerce and the Broward County Black Chamber of Commerce, emphasized the significance of the event.

Gelin states that Black Chamber Day serves as a crucial platform for business leaders, chamber presidents, and entrepreneurs to gain valuable insights into navigating the intricacies of government funding and policy-making processes.

Keynote speakers illuminate the path forward

Sponsored by Florida Prepaid College Savings Plans, FPL’s BE PowerFL, and BBIF, the event boasted an impressive lineup of speakers.

Notable figures such as Secretary of Florida Commerce J. Alex Kelly, CEO of Visit Florida Dana Young, and incoming Florida House Speaker Danny Perez graced the stage, delivering insightful addresses on pivotal topics ranging from small business capital to tourism development.

Advocating for economic empowerment

Senator Thompson shed light on plans for a groundbreaking museum dedicated to African American history in Florida, emphasizing its potential economic impact.

The attendees also heard from elected officials who sit on the Senate Committee on Transportation, Tourism, and Economic Development as well as the House Committee on Infrastructure & Tourism. Between speakers, chamber presidents and their members visited their elected officials to discuss appropriations and policy.

With over 380,000 black-owned businesses calling Florida home, Black Chamber Day underscores the urgent need for advocacy and support. 

The Florida Association of Black Chambers of Commerce remains steadfast in its commitment to creating an environment conducive to entrepreneurial success, ensuring that black entrepreneurs continue to drive job creation and economic vitality.

The 4th Annual Black Chamber Day at the Capitol will be held in March 2025.
