10 things to do in Vancouver this week (January 29-February 2)

While it doesn’t look like the rainy weather letting up anytime soon, that doesn’t mean we can’t keep our spirits high and enjoy a range of activities this week. From celebrating Black History Month at the Vancouver International Film Fest to an illuminated Valentine’s Day experience, here are 10 of the best things to do in and around Vancouver this week (January 29-February 2).

Black in BC: Celebrating Black Excellence

From 3 to 7 pm on Thursday, February 1st, the Surrey Art Gallery & Surrey Civic Theatres is hosting a free event with inspirational speakers, food, music, and dance – bringing over 200 people together to celebrate the talent, cultures, and achievements of black communities in Canada.

Love Lights at Capilano Suspension Bridge 

Ready to treat yourself and a loved one to a special illuminated experience this Valentine’s Day? North Vancouver’s famed Capilano Suspension Bridge is set to transform for much of February, and if you loved their holiday-themed Canyon Lights display, you’ll definitely want to check this out.

When: Friday, February 2nd to February 25th
Where: Capilano Suspension Bridge Park
Cost: $59.95 to $66.95 per adult

Black History Month at VIFF 

In honour of Black History Month, the Vancouver International Film Festival (VIFF) is introducing a new series celebrating Black filmmakers and artists.

From February 2nd to 7th, visitors can check out a film record of Vancouver’s historic Hogan’s Alley, along with two inspiring international films (selected by director Jamila Pomeroy): Boots Riley’s Sorry to Bother You, and Suhaib Gasmelbari’s Talking About Trees.

As well, visitors can catch a free screening of Mighty Jerome – an inspiring documentary paying tribute to the late Charles Officer every Thursday this month.

Vancouver Giants

Switching gears a bit, the week wouldn’t be complete without a little action from the Vancouver Giants. Head to the Arena Bowl at the Langley Events Centre to watch them face off against the Cougars this week on Friday, February 2nd.

Tickets start at just over $20 a pop, and you can view the full list of home games scheduled for this season here.

PuSh Festival International Performing Arts Festival

You have until this weekend to check out a performance at this year’s PuSh Festival, and if you’re looking for some cool events to check out this week, there’s a performance at Waterfront Theatre by Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim, and a free installation by Nellie Gossen at the Scotiabank Dance Centre that’s open to the public until February 3rd.

Robson Square Ice Rink

For just $5 per skate rental, you can skate to your heart’s content at Robson’s Square. Stop by on a spontaneous trip downtown, or plan a special pre-dinner visit on your next date night.
