African women in photography and End Fund launch photography grant

In collaboration with the END Fund, African Women in Photography (AWP) has announced a new funding opportunity for African women photographers.

This initiative seeks to support visual storytelling that highlights the lived experiences of women and girls affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) across Africa.

The photography commission welcomes a variety of lens-based approaches, including fine art, documentary, and experimental work.

The selected projects will aim to shed light on the challenges posed by NTDs while showcasing the resilience and contributions of affected women and girls in the END Fund’s program countries.

These include Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Sierra Leone, Mali, Niger, Chad, Sudan, Eritrea, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Nigeria, Central African Republic, South Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Republic of Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Angola, Rwanda, Burundi, Madagascar, and Zimbabwe.

Grant details and support

Five photographers will be selected to receive a $10,000 (KSh. 1.2m) commission grant, enabling them to develop, produce, and complete their projects within three months.

In addition to financial support, awardees will receive mentorship, resources, and guidance from AWP and its network of established photography professionals.

The selected works are expected to foster conversations about the impact of NTDs on health, education, economic opportunities, and social standing.

By bringing these stories to light, the initiative hopes to encourage social change and a deeper understanding of the challenges African women face.
