Atlantic City woman awarded grant NJ arts grant

ATLANTIC CITY — Michelle Washington Wilson, a city-based storyteller, teaching artist and folklorist, was awarded a $9,941 grant from the New Jersey State Council on the Arts to help with the preservation of the region’s African American culinary history.

Through her project, “With These Two Hands: Preserving and Sharing the Traditional Foods of African Americans in South Jersey,” Wilson will document the food ways of African American farm workers in the 1950s and 60s, in addition to their contribution to the state’s culinary landscape.

Wilson focuses on traditional foods and recipes that were passed down through generations, often via church kitchens and backyard barbecues, which were essential to the state’s Southern Soul Food heritage.

“I am deeply honored to receive this grant and excited to embark on this project,” said Wilson. “This is not just about preserving history; it’s about engaging our community in a meaningful way. By involving local residents, churches, and community groups, we can ensure that these traditions are not only remembered but also actively practiced and celebrated.”
