August kicks off Black Business Month in Montgomery with special event

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – August is Black Business Month, a time to acknowledge and appreciate Black-owned businesses and what they represent in the effort for diversity and equality. Black entrepreneurs play a valuable role in the nation’s economy. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s most recent estimates, the United States has more than 161,000 Black-owned businesses, bringing in over $183 billion annually.

That comes out to about 10% of all American businesses. Nearly 40 percent of those businesses are in industries like health care, social work, repair and maintenance, beauty salons, and restaurants.

Economists say Black women are starting businesses at a faster rate than any other demographic.
