Florida Black Excellence Fest kicks off with Top 20 Under 40 Breakfast

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Nearly two dozen young people of color were recognized Wednesday for the work they do in the community as part of a celebration on Juneteenth in Jacksonville.

The Florida Black Excellence Fest held its annual Top 20 Under 40 Breakfast where local leaders were credited for the work they do in the community.

The honorees, who ranged from doctors to lawyers to community organizers, said there were privileged to be recognized for working to make Jacksonville a better community for marginalized groups.

“Beyond fulfilling for me. Definitely commemorating Juneteenth as well as receiving this award is just beyond words for me. I’m very excited. I’m definitely grateful,” one honoree said.

Organizers say this program remembers the past while focusing on the future.

“In the present, understanding the significance of the younger generation. Seeing the celebrations going on today. We are remembering our past, going forward and thinking of our future, but also showcasing and impacting the current generation presently,” said Darrin Eakins, a member of the Florida Black Excellence Fest board.

Wednesday’s program kicked off a series of events held by the Florida Black Excellence Fest. The main event Sunday will include vendors and workshops at EverBank Stadium.
