Graphic Design: How To Confront Depression as a Creative

Depression and Anxiety is something we don’t talk about in the Graphic Design Industry. Yet many Graphic Designers struggle with depression throughout their design career.

Throughout my career as a graphic designer and creative professional I’ve fought with and overcome depression and severe anxiety at various times. It is something we all deal with, but most people don’t feel vulnerable enough to open up about it.

I feel that if we are more honest about the conversation of depression and mental health and try to remove the stigma around it we can improve things and get people some real help and sense of acceptance.

The times when I was dealing with depression as a graphic designer, my creative work suffered for it. I felt unmotivated, couldn’t deal with any sort of criticism and had no confidence in anything I was doing, and most of all I felt alone and lonely. This is something I feel many of you if you’re reading this can relate to.

I would encourage you to find people that you can open up to about this and share you feelings with, even if they don’t have answers there is comfort in knowing someone has heard you and that they care.

When I was younger I wish I had been more open about what I was going through and not let it come to a boiling point or a breakdown to admit there was an issue. Way too many of us try to take on this alone, but I feel that we should tackle depression and anxiety and mental health as a community.
