Holly Village Council to Consider Members for Cityhood Exploratory Committee

(Crystal A. Proxmire, Jan. 8, 2024)

Holly, MI – Holly Village President Ryan Delaney is asking Village Council to move forward with creating a committee to explore incorporating the Village into a city.

On the schedule for the Jan. 9, 2024 village council meeting is the appointment of four people to the committee – Delaney, as Council liaison, as well as residents Nancy Rebar, Vince Iafano, and Jim Koskela, however Iafano told Oakland County Times he is not planning to serve on the committee. There is also a note in the agenda that President Delaney may be appointing additional members to the committee at a later date.

According to the agenda “The committee will research all of the aspects and requirements of becoming a city and report back to Council their findings.”

Becoming a city would require putting it on the ballot for voters in the Village to decide.  Additionally, a charter would need to be written.

In a previous story, Delaney told Oakland County Times that by becoming a city and eliminating the 1 mil tax that goes to Holly Township it would save property owners money. However there are expenses that the city would have to take on including the cost of managing elections and assessing.

The committee is expected to figure out the costs and benefits before bringing a recommendation forward.

The meeting takes place Tuesday, Jan 9 at 6pm at 920 E. Baird Street.  For Village Council agendas visit the Village of Holly website.
