How To Pay For College Without Loans | 5 Ways

College is a tool, and you should go to the college that works best for you and your finances. I remember some of my friends going to college and walking away with 80k in student loan debt and a job that didn’t even have anything to do with their major.

1. the running start program
– you can take these programs to my knowledge when you are in 11th or 12th grade
– and you basically take college courses and earn credit for it
– and this can save you a lot of time, and money

when I was in high school
– I took an English course I think it was
– and an accounting course
– earned me a total of 6 credits for free

that may not sound like a lot:
– but I was paying about $700 per credit, now I think the price went up to $860
– So 6*700 = $4,200 that I saved

2. Ap or Clep test – test costs about $100 but could save you a lot of money
– in New York, we had something called a regents test, and if I scored above a 80% on my algebra test I would be able to skip math class in college ( that saved me money )
– I also took an AP Spanish class, but I’m not sure if I got credit in college for it

so on the AP side:
– seeing if you could take some ap classes
– may help with getting college credit

Clep test:
– allow you to take a test and if you pass the test you will be able to qualify for those general education credit credits
– And you won’t have to take them in college
– these test cost about $100 and take about 90-120 minutes

3. Going to community college for two years and entering a 4 year school a junior and paid a lot
– now I went to a private school where each credit was about $700 dollars
– that includes the price for the credits i need for my real major
– and those pesky general education courses

however, can you guess how much they would cost at the community college
– the community college was within walking distance from my house and was about $210 dollars per credit
– and it would be saved hours and hours of traveling to school, and countless headaches over 2 years

So picture this:
– I would have spent 2 years in community college getting myself about 40-60 gen ed credits required by most colleges at 30% of the cost
– You can pay $2400 per semester without debt, but it’s harder paying $8,400

4. Less for credits
– you need to shop around for credits
– take a look at each college and how much they are charging you for credit
– and choose a college, that gives you a better deal overall

Take into account
– grants
– scholarships
– and whatever help they give you
– and then run the prices
– the expensive school that’s offering you a lot of help, may be cheaper than the cheaper school that’s giving you no helping hand

5. Getting work study work
– now the tough part about working and being in college
– is the time schedule
– but work-study allows you to work around your schedule

When i was in college here is how i did it
– i was getting paid about $8.75 per hour, its usually minimum wage work
– and i was able to work part-time i think it was
– and make an extra $1000 or a little more per month
– its easy money

6. question: is it worth it for you as a parent to spend an extra decade working to take your kid to an expensive to school, to get a job, and work for someone else? I don’t think so. I don’t think that’s the most valuable thing you could give a kid
– I’m not the parent that’s planning to work decades to save for my kid’s college
– or the kid who hates that his mom didn’t pay for his college
– I get the game, and there are many other ways to play it
