Learn about the history, traditions, and importance of this day in American culture. Organizers from Homage to Black Excellence (H2BE), a Black-woman led organization in Dearborn that has organized Dearborn’s public Juneteenth celebrations for the last three years in a row, will be moderating a panel discussion on Celebrating Juneteenth in Dearborn: Why It’s Important on Saturday, June 15, 6-8 p.m. at the City Hall Artspace. Panelists include Dearborn residents Julia Kapilango (H2BE founder), DeJuan Bland (lead organizer for Metropolitan Organizing Strategy Enabling Strength) and Deborah Fair (Past President of the Michigan Black Presbyterian Caucus). “Homage to Black Excellence envisions empowering black voices ages 24 – 50, promoting diversity and inclusivity amongst families and communities, and providing unparalleled resources and opportunities for black artists to thrive and succeed,” information on the HBE website states. “Through innovative programs, partnerships, and initiatives, Homage to Black Excellence aims to elevate the visibility and impact of black literature on a global scale, while also creating sustainable economic growth and development within the black community.” Following the panel, there will be a question and answer session, light refreshments and music curated by H2BE. The session is free and open to the public. “All are encouraged to come with an open mind and heart and a willingness to learn in a safe space,” promotional materials said.
