Kids market features young entrepreneurs | Community

Excitement flowed through the dome at the New Glasgow Farmers Market recently during a kids market for aspiring entrepreneurs.Nearly 30 filled the dome on June 8 during the three hours the market operated, and some of them had already sold out halfway through their time there.Among them was a trio that included Sailor Penney, Aaryn Thompson and Clara Black with their wares that included jewelry and treats.“We made all this,” Penney said.Black explained that she wanted to raise money for a vacation time, perhaps at a beach, and encouraged her two friends to join the project.“My mom asked if I wanted to do this,” she said. “I did another sale before. I didn’t want to do this one alone, so I asked my friends.”Market manager Kristi Russell remarked about how hard the kids worked to prepare for their market. Customers were encouraged to bring cash because most vendors would not be able to accept credit or debit. Neither N.S. Loyal school vouchers nor Market Money were accepted. The market offered hot dogs, chips and drinks for sale and opened its café.  Russell explained that the kids market was a chance for them to experience the market atmosphere the way regular vendors do.“We’re so full during our regular market, so there is not much space for them,” she said. “We were hoping we’d have enough kids to fill the space. It’s great.”Russell said the young people offered a balance of products that makes markets like this work better. She also said she appreciated the customers’ response and how timely it was to schedule the event after the early morning rain stopped.“I’m glad the community came out,” she said. “I was a little worried with the rain in the morning.” Russell said plans are under way to have another kids market in the fall.
