MADISON (WKOW) — Over 1,100 children registered to meet Santa Claus at the Progress Center for Black Women’s Photos with Santa event on Saturday.

The free event featured arts and crafts, treats, and a Santa photo-op focused on inclusivity and holiday cheer.

Sabrina Madison, founding CEO of the Progress Center for Black Women, shared why the event is meaningful to her.

“I didn’t have a photo with a Black Santa as a child,” she said. “We dream in dreams that look like us … when we dream of a Santa, we should also be able to dream of a Black Santa.”

Jazmynn Appleton, Manager of Entrepreneurial Opportunities, discussed how organizers strove to bring as much holiday spirit and joy to the event as possible.

With a child of her own, Appleton was clear on her hope for everyone to enjoy the Christmas spirit this season.

“[The kids] see all the holiday cheer going on,” she said. “And they’re happy just coming in [and] being able to enjoy it.
