Ride & Resist: Black Girl Freedom Ride & Political Education Salon

When Jalonda Hill, Founder and President of Colored Girls Bike Too (CGBT), opened her Community Bike Shop, Holistic Cycles, and Mobility Bank hub at 1353 Jefferson Avenue, she did so with the intent of empowering black women. By empowering people through in ways that should be considered normal, but are actually considered alternative due to lack of access, CGBT has become a solid(arity) anchor in the community. This anchor does everything, from providing marginalized people with healthy food to encouraging them to reconsider their lifestyle choices through new opportunities.

“The bike is more than just movement—it’s a tool of liberation,” said Hill. “For the body. For the mind. For the community. And this ride is a living embodiment of that truth. We ride with purpose—to awaken consciousness, to confront the systems of power, profit, and greed that continue to exploit and oppress the global majority.

Yes, the bike has been co-opted by industries that profit off trends and aesthetics—but for so many of us, it remains a tool of survival. A way to get to and from work, to connect with our neighbors, to build community, and to reclaim space in a world that was never built with us in mind.

The event kicks off with a community bike ride, followed by a political education salon unpacking core social and political concepts.

It’s no accident that the bike is part of this struggle. It’s eco-friendly. It builds collective power. It strengthens the body. And outside of the materials used to build it, it challenges the logic of capitalism—a simple, powerful machine that moves people, not profits.”

On Saturday, July 26, CGBT invites women of color, and gender-nonbinary women of color, to participate in a Ride & Resist: Black Girl Freedom Ride & Political Education Salon. The event will take place at 1353 Jefferson Avenue from 12:30pm to 3:30pm. The political education salon will be led by Rev. Dr. Majadi Baruti.
