Savannah State University spring commencement takes place Friday

Savannah State University will host its spring 2024 commencement on Friday, May 3.The university will distribute degrees to 355 graduates, making it its most significant graduating class in recent years.”I think the most important thing is that they have learned how to thrive; they have learned how to survive,” said Savannah State interim president Cynthia Alexander.This group of graduates was part of the class of 2020 and did not get a high school diploma.”Pinky” Cole Hayes, the founder of the trendy Atlanta-based Slutty Vegan restaurant chain and 2023 TIME100 Next honoree, is returning to Savannah State University this spring to deliver the commencement speech to the class of 2024. Hayes visited the university in the fall as part of her book tour for her autobiography, “I Hope You Fail.” The book details the trials and tribulations she overcame to become the successful owner of 14 restaurants in Georgia, New York, Texas, and Alabama in just six years.The university will also host its annual scholarship gala on Saturday, May 4.The sold-out gala is at the Mariott Savannah Riverfront; proceeds go to funding students on a need-based matter.Pinky Cole gave an inspiring commencement speech for the Savannah State University 2024 graduating class and surprised the graduates with a very special gift. Their college years began with a global pandemic and they have had to navigate their lives through unprecedented events.
