Soapstone Campground closed while officials attempt to trap black bear

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The Soapstone Campground in Kamas is closed due to black bear activity in the area.

The Heber-Kamas Ranger District announced yesterday that the campground, as well as dispersed camping areas located to the north and south, will be closed for the time being while the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources attempts to trap a black bear that has been frequenting the area.

All current campers have been evacuated, and reservations will be refunded on a day-to-day basis until the campground is reopened.

The Granite Flat Campground and Deer Creek Trailhead and parking area in Utah County are also currently closed due to the presence of a black bear in the area, which the DWR is also currently attempting to trap.
