GET RESOURCES State Investing in Black, Latine, and Tribal Communities | News AdminMay 7, 2024046 views The Washington State Department of Commerce has announced $9.8 million in grants to 28 regional organizations and institutions specifically looking to support financial coaching for underserved communities that have been impacted by “enforcement of state criminal laws and penalties for drug possession,” according to a Commerce release. The grants are being funded by the Washington State Community Reinvestment Account. Financial resources will prioritize Black, Latine, and tribal communities but are not limited to these communities alone, the release noted. Mentorship and financial coaching offered by the funding looks to recognize and honor cultural heritage and backgrounds and will include homebuyer education, business coaching, debt remediation, construction loans, and more, the release added. “Financial coaches employ a proven, integrated investment approach — working together across career, education, and lending programs — to help families achieve their goals,” Commerce Director Mike Fong said in the release. “We are excited to see the results of these financial wellness programs designed by and for the communities who have been most impacted by the historical design and enforcement of criminal laws and penalties for drug possession in our state.” The funding provided to community members will also assist by providing financial education surrounding better wages, reducing debt, raising credit scores, and saving money. More than 120 organizations applied for funding. Applicants selected for funding will receive between $200,000 and $375,000 over a 15-month award period, the release said.
