Accurate Books Still Leave Founders Exposed, Finance Leader Warns

Clean P&Ls answer whether you can afford a hire; they may not test the assumptions that make the hire work, she writes.

The Guapify Breakdown

Accurate financial statements can still steer a founder into a bad call, Black Enterprise reports in a piece by Rehana Mohamed, who draws on 16 years across auditing, banking, operations, tech, and finance leadership. Her point: a profit-and-loss statement shows what already happened, and a forecast only assigns figures to guesses about demand, costs, collections, and capacity. Money may show up long after revenue is booked; a "profitable" job can eat more staff time than it looks; one strong quarter can hang on a client who might leave. Citing the National Bankers Association's read of Fed small-business survey data from 2025, the outlet notes that about three in four Black-owned employer firms expected higher sales in the year ahead while nearly half said they were running at a loss—a reminder to separate growth hopes from present capacity. Mohamed flags four common traps: a salary that fits annual profit but squeezes cash when clients pay in 60 days; matching a rival's $300 fee without matching their costs and capacity; a $5,000 job that looks fine until you count discovery, revisions, and follow-up; and a second site funded by six good months that collapses when a key customer leaves. She urges five checks before you commit: name what must be true, map when cash moves over the next 90 days, list dependencies that never appear on the report, pick warning signs early, and ask whether a pilot or phased step keeps options open. The money lesson: you can outsource the books, but not the judgment that connects the numbers to the decision—and "therefore" is often the most expensive word in a founder's vocabulary.

Talk it over

  1. 1Before your last big money decision, what assumption did you forget to test?
  2. 2How do you check when cash actually arrives versus when revenue shows on paper?
  3. 3Would you pilot a hire or expansion before locking in the full cost?
