The black man can never be equal if he can’t do this – Dr Boyce Watkins

Historically, black people have been harmed and controlled by the economic system because the “see-saw” of our labor market is imbalanced. We have too many people seeking jobs and not enough people creating jobs. This leads to white America filling the void by providing the jobs we seek.

As a result of whites providing most of the jobs that black people need, we end up leaving our own communities and working for businesses across town. This leads to massive economic development of the white community at the expense of black people, and an incredible brain drain, as our best and brightest are off solving problems for other people. This issue was addressed directly in the book, “Black Labor, White Wealth” by Dr Claud Anderson.

Also, the inability to create labor markets doesn’t just create white economic supremacy, it also enhances the white supremacist power structure because black people are forced to beg whites for opportunities. So, when a young black man goes to church and prays to Jesus that “somebody gives me an opportunity,” he’s really praying to the white man, who has become his economic god.

So, rather than viewing opportunities as something that others give us, we should understand the opportunities are actually something that we can create for ourselves. This only requires that our children be raised with the skill and expectation that they can create jobs for their own people rather than simply sitting back and hoping that someone does it for them.

If the black man spends his life believing that his success is solely managed by the good will of the white man, then how can you ever say these two men are equals? If one man controls another man, they are NEVER going to be seen as equal.

The fact is this: Until the black man learns to create his own economic opportunities, it will be difficult to say that he is fully a man in the eyes of this society. The false idea that we must wait for others to give us our freedom is a flawed and problematic manifestation of the White Supremacy that plagues our entire society.

We must teach our chidren to do better.

Sincerely,
Dr Boyce Watkins
