The Difference a Year Can Make

In March 2022, Jessica R., a single mother living paycheck to paycheck, was referred to Operation HOPE’s Credit and Money Management Program by her sister. Skeptical yet hopeful, Jessica began a journey that she initially believed was beyond her reach—purchasing her own home that her family could enjoy.

Jessica’s HOPE financial coach, Alisha, assessed her financial situation during their initial meeting. Despite Jessica’s concerns about her low 621 credit score and having no savings, Alisha saw a path forward. “We discussed my goals, credit, and finances. Seeing the low credit score and the amount of expenses only validated my concerns that I had coming into the meeting,” Jessica recounted. Yet, Alisha’s optimism was contagious. She laid out a clear plan that included budgeting, saving, and debt elimination.

As they worked together, Jessica’s perspective began to shift. Monthly follow-ups with Alisha not only tracked her progress but also boosted her confidence. Jessica began to see the impact of her work as the improvements and credit score increases continued. “The task was not easy, but I was seeing improvements during my scheduled monthly follow-up calls with Alisha. This boosted my confidence as well as my determination to remain on track to achieving my goal,” she said.

By February 2023, Jessica was financially prepared to start the home-buying process! Just two months later, she achieved what once seemed impossible. “By April 2023, I closed on my first home! The impossible was possible, and I owe all the gratitude to Alisha for getting me on the right track,” Jessica expressed.

Reflecting on her accomplishments and the changes in her life since graduating from the program in May, Jessica felt a tremendous sense of transformation. No longer living paycheck to paycheck, her financial stability greatly improved, and her FICO score was nearing an excellent rating. “This program not only made it possible for me to achieve my goal of purchasing my first home but created a better lifestyle for me and my children,” she said.

Jessica’s journey with Operation HOPE exemplifies the transformative power of dedicated financial coaching and personal commitment. Her story is a testament to the fact that with the right support and a resilient mindset, achieving financial independence and securing a better future is attainable. Jessica’s final words offer encouragement to others facing similar challenges: “My only advice is to keep pushing no matter what situation you are faced with. We all have a goal to reach and we will make it to the finish line in our own timeline.”
