The Music Rights Draft: Which Back Catalog is the Most Valuable?

If you had a $10 billion fund to buy the full music rights to any musicians — who would you pick to maximize shareholder value for the next 10 years? Most fund managers have to choose from what’s available. But on today’s episode, Denisha Kuhlor and Ipicked from any artist, living or dead..

We did a mock draft. Each of us got seven picks. Any artists’ catalog, living or dead, was on the table. Our goal is to score the biggest ROI for investors on a 10-year timeline from purely catalog revenue, including royalties from streaming, syncs, physical, digital, and more..

Touring and merchandise aren’t factored in, and neither are future catalog releases, only what’s already been released to date.

Denisha and I took very different approaches. Here’s what to expect:

1:33 Draft parameters
4:58 First-round picks
9:45 Second-round picks
14:21 Third-round picks
18:50 Fourth-round picks
23:31 Fifth-round picks
27:10 Sixth-round picks
30:50 Seventh-round picks
37:36 Honorable mentions
51:26 Up-and-coming artists
