The New England Civil War Museum Getting Unique Grant

VERNON, CT — The New England Civil War Museum and Research Center is getting a unique grant for a unique display.

The board of directors of CT Humanities Monday announced that it has awarded $36,025 in humanities project grants from the CT Humanities fund to eight nonprofits, including the museum.

The museum is located on the second floor of Vernon Town Hall in a full-preserved Grand Army of the Republic Hall that hosted post-war veterans meetings.

The grant to the museum is for a project that will highlight perspectives of Black, indigenous, and “people of color” during the Civil War;

The grant is for $4,980.

The idea is to “renovate the New England Civil War Museum tour experience to be more inclusive, interweaving personal perspectives of Black, indigenous, and people of color from the American Civil War era. With the close collaboration of descendants and influencers of BIPOC genealogy and research, this project will feature new visual interpretation and exhibit material for a sustainably inclusive tour framework.”

The plan is to have the project in place for the museum’s annual Living History Day on Sept. 28.
