The Red & Black publishes 2022-2023 Annual Report | Press-releases

Athens, Ga. – The Red & Black Publishing Company, Inc. is thrilled to announce the publication of its 2022-2023 annual report. This year’s report takes a dive into the organization’s finances, leadership changes, mission milestones and more.

Key Highlights

The tradition of excellence at The Red & Black has no expiration – for with each new academic year brings an opportunity for hundreds of students to write their first lead, make their first photo, make their first sale or see their first byline. With each new academic year brings the bittersweet turning of tassels as we send off fresh Red & Black alumni into the workforce to change the media landscape for the better.

In 2022, The Red & Black adjusted its print frequency to monthly editions, and invested in improved training, new computers and photo equipment. In 2023, Charlotte Norsworthy Varnum replaced Rebecca Burns as executive director, and The Red & Black celebrated its 130th birthday and 44 years of independence.

Looking ahead, we are planting seeds for bolstered digital ad sales, donations and other miscellaneous income to narrow our annual deficit. Our current deficit is covered by our reserves, but as we plan for the future, we are building systems to minimize the reliance on those funds.

More about The Red & Black

Founded in 1893, The Red & Black is an independent student news organization that covers the University of Georgia and Athens. We are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with the dual mission of training students for careers in the news media and serving our audience as a reliable, independent news source. Independent of the university, we receive no funding from UGA and support ourselves through advertising, events and donations. We publish news daily at redandblack.com and publish a weekly newspaper when regular UGA classes are in session on campus. We also publish special-interest guides including UGA 101 and Eat & Drink Athens, GA. In 2021, The Red & Black was named to the Pacemaker 100 — a national roster of the country’s best student newspapers — and we became the first student news organization accepted as a full member of the prestigious Institute for Nonprofit News.
