Wales kicks off year-long Black history celebration with major Cardiff event

A YEAR-long initiative celebrating the Black community’s contribution to Welsh history is set to launch at the end of this month.

Black History Wales 365 aims to ensure that the history, culture, and contributions of Black communities in Wales are recognised and celebrated throughout the year, not just during Black History Month.

The programme will officially launch on September 28 at St Fagans National Museum of History in Cardiff where its theme, ‘Black Icons of Wales’ will be unveiled.

Attendees will be treated to performances by Afropop and Afrobeat artist Wonder Boy Solek, an acapella choir, and spoken word from students of UWC Atlantic College.

The launch event will also feature steel pan music from Duo Flex, showcasing the diversity of Black culture through music, dance, and spoken word.

Visitors to the event will also have the opportunity to sample foods from the diverse Black communities that reside in Wales.

According to Race Council Cymru, the organisers of Black History Wales 365, the initiative is designed to provide ongoing opportunities for reflection on the contributions of Black people to Welsh society. By expanding the focus beyond the traditional Black History Month, the programme aims to offer a platform for continuous engagement with Black history across various regions of Wales.

Diane Hebb of Arts Council Wales, which is supporting the event, commented: “Black History Wales provides a vital opportunity to celebrate the contributions of Black artists and communities to Wales’ cultural life, contributions that are deeply rooted in our nation’s history and creativity.”

Molara Awen, Chair of Black History Wales 365, emphasised the importance of the event taking place at St Fagans.

She said: “We come together here to kickstart a year of celebrating Black stories and Black excellence. St Fagans has embraced our history, acknowledging that Welshness is enriched by diversity and inclusion.”
