Why YouTube And Record Labels Were At Odds For Years



YouTube has the upper hand when it comes to negotiations.

The 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) shields YouTube from copyright infringement as long as they provide a robust system for copyright takedowns.

There’s no way for record labels and publishers to prevent all their music from being uploaded to the platform, but YouTube has made great strides with Content ID to improve this process for rightsholders.
