Women Who Code Shuts Down After Pioneering Diversity In Tech – peopleofcolorintech

Women Who Code (WWC), a charity supporting women in the tech industry founded by Reshma Saujani,  has announced its closure due to financial difficulties.

Founded in 2011 in San Francisco by engineers seeking community and support, WWC had grown into a global force with 360,000 members across 145 countries. 

The organization, known for hosting over 20,000 events and distributing $3.5 million in scholarships, has long been a beacon for women navigating the male-dominated tech landscape.

WWC Closes

The unexpected shutdown of WWC has sent shockwaves through the tech community. 

“It is with profound sadness that, today… we are announcing the difficult decision to close Women Who Code, following a vote by the Board of Directors to dissolve the organization,” WWC stated in a press release.

“While so much has been accomplished, our mission is not complete and our vision of a tech industry where diverse women and historically excluded people thrive at every level is not fulfilled.”

The company stated it has to close due to factors that have materially impacted their funding sources.

Future Challenges and Industry Reflection

The closure raises pressing questions about the ongoing struggle for gender diversity in tech, a sector where women make up about 34% of the workforce in major US companies. 

The dissolution of WWC adds to the fragility of support systems that are crucial for diversity and inclusion.
