In this week’s episode of the Journey to Launch Podcast, I chat with Lee-Ann Pinkard, who was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, before moving to the U.S. to attend Howard University and build a career in construction project management. Years later, she purchased a beachside property in Jamaica, a home I personally had the pleasure of staying in, that she now runs as a short-term rental while living in the States.

Her thought process was simple but strategic: “We want to retire in Jamaica. Let’s buy something now and make it a short term rental so it can help us pay for it in the meantime instead of waiting until we’re ready to retire and buying something ridiculously expensive.”

We talk about what it actually takes to buy property in Jamaica, how mortgages and banking differ from the U.S., and the importance of trusted local connections. Lee-Ann also shares the real costs of managing an overseas Airbnb, including hurricanes, cancellations, and unexpected expenses, and candidly admits it has not broken even yet. This is an honest conversation about long term investing, balancing corporate life and motherhood, and building wealth with purpose as she plans to one day retire back home.
