Saanich seniors will see more programs aimed at reducing isolation thanks to more than $2.5 million in federal funding.

The municipality announced it will receive $2.53 million over five years from the New Horizons for Seniors Program.

The project will expand community programming and resources for seniors aged 55 and older, including newcomers, Indigenous, Black, racialized and gender diverse residents in Greater Victoria. The funding will also support organized events, drop-in sessions and transportation options to improve accessibility.

“Isolation is a serious issue for seniors, particularly for those facing language barriers, a lack of familiarity with available resources, and transportation or mobility concerns,” said Mayor Dean Murdock. “This funding will go a long way towards ensuring all members of our community can participate in activities, improve their social connections and feel like they belong in Saanich.”
