The seventh annual Detroit Black Film Festival, titled Sincerely Detroit, runs from Sept. 23 through Sept. 27, with screenings, panels, workshops, and talks at various locations around town. Festivalgoers got an early start with a watch party on Sept. 9 for the season two finale of Diarra From Detroit. This event drew more than 250 people to Preva Night Club. The series creator, Diarra Kilpatrick, appeared for the watch party, as did celebrities Icewear Vezzo, J Bell, and Comedian CP. Paris Noel and BevLove performed, according to the Metro Times.Main programming continues Friday, Sept. 19, with Can You Stand the Rain?, which screens for free at The Bridge Center, a community showing through a partnership with Detroit Nonprofit Organization (DABO). Attendees need to RSVP for this event.The Filmmakers Lounge sits at the Imani Humphrey Event Hall and acts as the festival hub. Closing night on Sept. 27 features another Sincerely Detroit short, My Hands Touch the Sands, directed by Zachery Cunningham and Gregory Dockery, then a talk with Kilpatrick.Lazar and Marshalle Favors, a husband-and-wife team, started the festival. They spent 20 years building projects around Black film, entrepreneurship, and culture through Trinity Films Entertainment Group, which they founded in 2006.The Favors also run the Detroit Trinity International Film Festival, the Fearless Tribe of Fanatic Filmmakers, and The Collective Studios. Their work spreads through Black Spirits Legacy LLC and the Taste of Black Spirits events, which promote Black-owned companies in the spirits industry.Organizers say this is the only festival built around an exhibition devoted entirely to Black-owned spirits, beer, wine, and other beverages. Its Liquid Forum brings filmmakers together with entrepreneurs and professionals from the beverage industry.Support for the Detroit Black Film Festival comes from the Ford Foundation, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the Detroit Historical Museum, The Love Building, Silverline Entertainment, OmniTV, Roar Brewery, UpliftTV, and Trinity Films Entertainment Group.
