How long to make YouTube videos is something I get asked a lot.

The truth is that it all depends on your audience. If you want to get more views on your YouTube videos or your YouTube channel then you need to consider that YouTube watch time plays a critical role in getting exposure and higher rankings for your YouTube videos but also that your audience will decide how long a video is worth watching.

Making shorter YouTube videos is not magic solution for geting more retention, and retention and watch time are very different. YouTube cares more about how long you kept a viwer on YouTube as a whole, than whether or not the watched the entire video all the way through. So a 30 minute video with 40% average retention is actually more valuable to yo cannel than a 5 minute video with 80% retention. Watchtime for YouTube is a big part of ranking and getting more views overall.
