Many of these caddies came from neighborhoods like Sand Hills, Harrisburg, Laney-Walker and Bethlehem Historic Districts in Augusta.
“Their presence and their unique aura made it possible for someone like me, a young Black man from Augusta who dreamed beyond my backyard and beyond these magnolias I could see on Berckmans,” Carpenter said.
Carpenter said he comes from a long line of caddies. His uncle won his first Masters with golfer Gary Player in 1974 and again in 1978. His grandfather Leon, father Gary, brother and Carpenter himself have all worked as caddies.
He added that his first golf lesson with his dad took place at The Patch.
“I would like to thank these gentlemen who not only paved my future in golfing in what I have done, but for so many,” he said.
The project began in 2020 following unanimous approval by the Augusta-Richmond County Commission. Those involved in the effort included Commissioner William “Bill” Fennoy, sculptor Edward Durant, Augusta National Golf Club retiree Lawrence Bennett, Joyce Law and other advocates for historic preservation.
“Let this artwork stand as a symbol of dignity, excellence and an enduring spirit,” Maben said,
Durant decided to make a 25 foot golf tee instead of a traditional stone piece, saying it’s something the whole community can enjoy.
“When you see, you will be amazed,” he said.
Muralist Baruti Tucker said the featured caddies represent powerful examples of what Black excellence can be – rooted in knowledge and community impact.
“These men are examples of dignity when being unnoticed and living excellence,”he said.
Maben said now is the time to honor the caddies’ legacy.
“You present helps ensure that these stories are never forgotten,” he said.
Carpenter said the sculpture is a part of history .
“As we unveil this sculpture today, let this serve as a reminder that the footsteps of the legendary caddies echo through Augusta,” he said. “Their legacy lives on with every young caddy that picks up a bag, every young golfer who learns the game and every dream that believes golf is for them too.”
