Amazon is investing $10B in a new AI-focused data center hub in North Carolina, aiming to expand infrastructure for AI and Cloud Computing

The Richmond County project will generate 500 high-skilled jobs and support thousands more

Amazon (AMZN -0.34%) is staking a major claim in the South as it expands its artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure with a $10 billion data center investment in North Carolina. The move is more than a tech upgrade, it’s a strategic cultural and economic bet on a state where Black communities make up 22.1% of the population, opening doors for inclusive job growth and innovation. The tech’s groundbreaking Richmond County AI and cloud-computing hub will be developed over the next decade by Amazon Web Services (AWS), according to Amazon’s official announcement. The company says the investment will not only upgrade its AI capabilities but also generate hundreds of new jobs in Richmond and Gaston counties.

Why This Matters: AI has become the battleground for innovation, and Amazon’s bold infrastructure play ensures it remains at the forefront. The choice of North Carolina isn’t just about land and logistics. It is a nod to the potential of underserved communities to participate in and benefit from the next digital revolution. With increased investment comes the potential for new career pipelines, apprenticeships, and tech entrepreneurship opportunities for the region’s Black population.

This expansion deepens Amazon’s roots in North Carolina, where it has already invested $12 billion over the past 15 years. That financial footprint has supported 24,000 full- and part-time jobs and over 26,000 indirect positions, showing how deeply tech dollars are shaping local economies. Amazon’s growing presence also signals a rising trend among big tech players. Apple has committed $175 million to expand its data center in Maiden, located in Catawba County. The growing momentum of these projects could catalyze a broader push toward corporate diversity and inclusion in a state already rich in Black culture and history.

Situational Awareness: As Amazon builds out its future in the cloud, it’s anchoring that vision in a place where business and culture intersect, the returns could be shared more equitably than ever before in Big Tech.
