BET has reportedly suspended its annual Soul Train Awards and Hip-Hop Awards shows.

In an interview with Billboard published on Tuesday, BET CEO Scott Mills shared the news. “So for BET linear, we have suspended the Soul Train and Hip-Hop award shows,” he said.

The network executive further told the outlet that these programs haven’t been cancelled, but put on pause. “We have a team that’s actively thinking about where those award shows might best live as the media climate continues to evolve. They aren’t gone,” Mills assured.

Still, Mills provided no estimate as to when shows will return.

The Soul Train Awards, inspired by the iconic “Soul Train” TV show, were created by the show’s founder, Don Cornelius, in 1987. The show recognizes achievements in Black music, specifically highlighting soul music, contemporary R&B, gospel, jazz, reggae, and hip-hop.

The last Soul Train Awards took place in 2023, hosted by Keke Palmer. The network did not host the award show in 2024 or 2025. Prior to this pause, BET had aired the show annually since 1987, with the exception of 2008.

Meanwhile, the Hip-Hop Awards are a little bit newer. Created in 2006, this annual music award show from BET recognizes outstanding achievements in hip hop music. The show features an innovative slate of awards like DJ of the Year, Hustler of the Year, Impact Track, and Made-You-Look.

The last Hip Hop Awards aired on BET in Oct. 2024 and was hosted by Fat Joe.

Mills did not comment on the status of the BET Awards, which is the network’s biggest award show. The BET Awards honor Black excellence in music, sports, film, television, and philanthropy.
