Gilda’s West to host ‘Achievements in Black History’ Celebration for all ages
Gilda’s West is inviting the community to celebrate Black History Month
AND A GOOD MORNING TO YOU. I’M SHAQUILLE LORD TODAY I’M JOINED BY A VERY SPECIAL GUEST, SYLVIA ROSE, WITH GILDA’S WEST. SHE’S HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH CELEBRATION HAPPENING WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH. INSIDE THE REPUBLIC BANK FOUNDATION YMCA BUILDING. SYLVIA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING. THANK YOU FOR HAVING ME. YES. ALL RIGHT, SO TALK A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THIS BLACK HISTORY EVENT THAT’S TAKING PLACE. WELL, FIRST OF ALL, IT’S GILDA’S CLUB AND IT IS LOCATED IN WEST LOUISVILLE. SO IT’S GILDA’S WEST IS WHAT WE CALL IT. SO WE’RE DOING A BLACK HISTORY CELEBRATION. THIS WILL BE OUR THIRD ONE. AND WE’RE REALLY EXCITED ABOUT THIS ONE. SO THE Y WHERE WE’RE LOCATED, WE’RE PARTNERING WITH THEM AND WE’RE GOING TO HAVE GRACE JAMES ACADEMY. WE’LL HAVE THEIR CHOIRS TO COME OVER. I BELIEVE IT’S GOING TO BE THREE OF THEM THIS YEAR VERSUS JUST ONE FROM LAST YEAR. WE’LL HAVE THEIR STAFF TEAM THAT WE’LL HAVE A STUDENT FROM IROQUOIS HIGH SCHOOL. HE’S 18 YEARS OLD, AND AT PRESENT HE IS DOING A DUAL CLASS FOR UNIVERSITY OF LOUISVILLE. AND SO WHAT WE’RE WANTING TO THE PUBLIC TO SEE AND EVERYONE IS INVITED. IT’S A FREE EVENT, AND WE’LL EVEN HAVE AT THE END OF THE EVENT, WE’LL HAVE SOME SWEETS AND SOME LITTLE SOFT DRINKS AND THINGS LIKE THAT. BUT WHAT WE WANT EVERYONE TO SEE IS THE ACHIEVEMENTS THAT WE AS AFRICAN AMERICANS HAVE MADE IN HISTORY, PAST, PRESENT AND FUTURE. SO WE’RE LOOKING AT OUR OUR YOUNGER SENIORS, AND THEN WE’RE LOOKING AT OUR SENIORS, AND THEN WE’RE LOOKING AT OUR YOUNGER PEOPLE. WE’RE DOING A PIECE THIS YEAR FIRST TIME AT IT. IT WILL BE THE BLACK ENTREPRENEUR CORNER. AND SO THAT WILL BE INDIVIDUALS WHO HAVE ON THEIR OWN BUSINESS AS BLACKS. AND SO WE’RE VERY EXCITED ABOUT THAT. WHAT DO YOU THINK THAT DOES TO A YOUNG PERSON SEEING THAT, SEEING SOMEONE WHO LOOKS LIKE THEM IN THESE DIFFERENT SPACES OF EITHER OWNING A BUSINESS OR DOING X, Y, AND Z FOR A YOUNG PERSON, WHAT DO YOU THINK? AND THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT OF IT. WE HEAR SO MANY NEGATIVE THINGS ABOUT THINGS THAT YOU ARE GETTING INVOLVED IN, AND WE FORGET ABOUT THAT GROUP THAT IS REALLY TRYING TO SPAR. AND SO FOR THEM, IT LETS THEM SEE THAT THEY CAN DO THIS TOO. AND THERE’S A YOUNG LADY THAT WILL BE THERE FROM ONE OF OUR PHARMACIES THAT’S A BLACK OWNED BUSINESS, AND SHE’S DOCTOR MICHAELA BROOKS, AND SHE’S A YOUNG LADY, AS I SAID. SO WE WANT THEM TO LOOK AT THOSE WHO LOOK LIKE THEM, AND THEY CAN BE INSPIRED BY THEM. SIMMONS COLLEGE WILL ALSO BE THERE. THEIR PROGRAM IS FOR INDIVIDUALS 26 YEARS AND OLDER WHO HAVE HAD TO DROP OUT OF SCHOOL FOR SOME REASON ALONG THE WAY. AND SO THAT’S ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY FOR INDIVIDUALS TO SEE THAT YOU CAN GO BACK AND YOU CAN FINISH PROVIDING HOPE AND INSPIRATION TO THE YOUNGER GENERATION. ALL RIGHT, SYLVIA, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR JOINING US THIS MORNING TO TALK ABOUT THIS AGAIN. IT’S HAPPENING WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 11TH. IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN LEARNING MORE AND ATTENDING IT IS FREE. JUST HEAD OVER TO WLKY.COM. LATER THIS AFTERNOON WE’LL HAVE AN ARTICLE POSTED WITH ALL THE INFORMATION YOU NEED TO KNOW.
