Art and Graphic Design, or Design in general, are very different. While they have much in common art and design serve different goals and have different goals behind them.

The simplest way to explain the difference between them is that Art is Expressive while Design is about Communication. This is why Design used to be referred to as Visual Communication and in truth its still the more correct term.
