A historic Black-owned barbecue joint in Central Texas has reopened its doors just in time for the annual Austin City Limits music festival. Sam’s BBQ announced on social media that the restaurant is “SO back, Austin!”In late August, Sam’s closed unexpectedly after receiving a revamp to upgrade its power system. The 68-year-old East Austin business wrote that the closure would be temporary, “due to issues we are having with our building,” according to an Instagram post. After nearly a month of the shutter, Sam’s BBQ posted on Monday, September 30, that the restaurant and its attached Austin Daiquiri Factory (ADF) are now open.”We’re so thankful to open our doors again and serve the community we love,” Sam’s and ADF said on Instagram. The exterior of Sam’s BBQ in East Austin. (Cristela Jones/MySA)Sam’s and Austin Daiquiri Factory are two of only a few Black-owned businesses left in East Austin, which before gentrification was a historically Black and Hispanic neighborhood in Texas’ capital city. Sam’s BBQ owner Brian Mays has been smoking meats for nearly 50 years. He took over the business from his father, who began the restaurant in 1957.Continuing the family tradition, one of Mays’ daughters has been operating Austin Daiquiri Factory on the side porch of Sam’s BBQ. While customers can get a taste of Sam’s’ legendary BBQ plates, filled with tender brisket, sausage, ribs and more, those who are 21+ can also grab a frozen daiquiri to pair with their meals next door.ADF’s menu includes drinks like “The Dirty 6th,” a piña colada hypnotical and “The Texan” made with strawberry, rita and watermelon daiquri mix.Sam’s BBQ and ADF hours are Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sunday and Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Both businesses are closed on Tuesdays.Find it: 2000 E. 12th St., Austin, TX 78702This article originally published at Legendary Black-owned BBQ joint reopens just in time for ACL.
