The Northern Ontario Black Economic Empowerment Program (NOBEEP) has started a new program, the Northern Ontario Business Settlement Service, which it will detail in a live webinar from the Community Economic Development Commission, on Tuesday.Charles Nyabeze, NOBEEP co-founder and chief executive officer, said the initiative aims to connect Black entrepreneurs, investors, and business owners from outside Northern Ontario with the opportunities and resources available in the region.”We realize that there are many Black people who are looking to migrate to Northern Ontario from Black nations and some of these business owners and investors don’t really understand the lay of the land in Northern Ontario,” Nyabeze said. “Through the Northern Ontario Black Economic Empowerment Program, we are offering the new business settlement service to entrepreneurs, investors and business owners of Black nations who want to move to Northern Ontario, and get some blending support services to investigate opportunities to start their businesses here.”Nyabeze called it a “pathway” for migrating individuals to bring their businesses and foreign direct investments to Northern Ontario.”This is an approach for us to be able to make sure that they are doing so in a way that is culturally appropriate for Canada,” he said.Arriving from another country, Nyabeze says they have no real network, extended families or business associates.”We’re giving (newcomers) access to a platform where they can establish a network in a way that’s controlled,” he said. ” We’re not giving these individuals special new services. We’re simply giving them a pathway for a bit of a concierge service on how they can access existing resources in northern Ontario.”He added that this is about empowering Black people to participate more fully in the economy, and to be able to contribute in a more meaningful way by opening their own business rather than picking up service jobs.”We think business development and business services are areas where we can really leverage people who want to work and want to service the economy,” Nyabeze said. The Business Settlement Service is really about leveraging Northern Ontario’s business ecosystem, to promote new business development and direct foreign investment in Northern Ontario.”For more information or to register for the information webinar, visit nobeep.ca/services.
