MAG hosts Met Gala-inspired fundraiser to send Rochester students to college

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority hosted its annual fundraiser at the Memorial Art Gallery on Friday night, aiming to raise money to send Rochester’s youth to college.

This year, the “Black Excellence at the MAG’ fundraiser’s theme was inspired by the world-famous Met Gala. Guests enjoyed eating, dancing, bidding on silent auctions, and performances by the same students the event seeks to support.

August Witherspoon, the gala chair, said this event is a great way to honor the community and teachers while raising money for a good cause.

“Every year, we come together to raise money to send young women to college,” Witherspoon said. “So this is just a great way to honor our community as well as honor our teachers.”

Proceeds from the gala benefit the Romunda Harris-Fonville Scholarship, which helps send young women to college.
