THOMASVILLE, Ga. (WCTV) – The Jack Hadley Black History Museum in Thomasville is set to receive a lump sum of money in hopes of expanding “its programming and audience,” according to Congressman Sanford Bishop Jr.’s press release.

Congressman Bishop announced Friday a $413,425 federal grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) for the Jack Hadley Black History Museum.

“The Jack Hadley Black History Museum has been a critical organ for historical preservation and education in Thomas County for the past 30 years, and I am delighted to announce this new award which will allow the Museum to expand its programming and audience,” Congressman Bishop said.

Daniel Pittman, executive director of the Thomasville museum, believes this grant will assist in attracting younger audiences and ensuring that the history of African Americans in Southwest Georgia is celebrated, preserved, and passed down to future generations.

“This significant support will enable us to enhance our exhibits at the future site of the museum with innovative audio/visual media and technology, creating a more engaging and immersive experience for our visitors,” Pittman said.

The Jack Hadley Black History Museum is Thomasville’s first African American museum, according to the release, and was established in 1995.

Preserving over 4,000 pieces of African American artifacts, the release said the museum features exhibits on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., African Americans in the military, Thomasville’s very own black history and several other topics.
