The Postbank has confirmed that South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) Gold Cards will continue to function beyond 31 May 2025, providing uninterrupted access to social grants for millions of beneficiaries across South Africa. In a statement released on Thursday, the bank assured grant recipients that their Gold Cards will remain operational until further notice, offering significant relief to those who have not yet transitioned to the new Postbank Black Cards.

Postbank’s confirmation brings clarity and reassurance to SASSA grant beneficiaries. Here’s what you need to know:

• Continued Functionality: SASSA Gold Cards will keep working across all payment systems, including ATMs and Point of Sale (POS) machines, even after 31 May 2025.
• Cash Withdrawals and Purchases: Beneficiaries can withdraw cash at Postbank’s partner retail stores and swipe their Gold Cards for purchases as they do now.
• No Disruptions: The bank has guaranteed that grant payments will continue without interruption for those still using Gold Cards.
• Temporary Suspension of New Black Cards: Postbank has paused the distribution of new Black Cards at its sites, though existing Black Cards will continue to work normally.
  Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe emphasized the bank’s commitment to its beneficiaries, stating:
  “In keeping with our commitment that we made that Postbank will ensure that no beneficiary will be left with no access to their grants and that there will be no disruptions in payments of grants, Gold Cards will continue to work until every beneficiary is transitioned to the new black card.”
  She added:
  “We are therefore hopeful and confident that this announcement addresses any concern relating to the payments of any beneficiaries that may not have yet obtained their Black Cards.”
  Addressing Misinformation
  Postbank has raised concerns about the spread of incorrect information regarding the SASSA Gold Cards. Mbengashe urged beneficiaries to be cautious:
  “We plead with them to be wary of misleading information that their Gold Cards will not work and that they need to change banks because of this.”
  The bank stressed that beneficiaries should only trust official communications from Postbank, as it is the sole authorized entity responsible for issuing these cards. Any information about the Gold Cards or Black Cards that does not come directly from Postbank should be disregarded to avoid confusion or being misled.
  Ongoing Services at Postbank Sites
  While the distribution of new Black Cards is on hold, Postbank’s card distribution sites remain open to assist beneficiaries with essential services, including:
• PIN Resets: For those needing to update their card PINs.
• Reissuing Lost or Stolen Black Cards: Beneficiaries who have lost their Black Cards or had them stolen can get replacements.
• Cardless Payment Registration: An alternative option for accessing grants without a physical card.
  This ensures that all beneficiaries, whether using Gold Cards or Black Cards, can continue to manage their grant payments effectively.
