Recently on “Wake Up With Dee” Host Dr. Dee Dawkins-Haigler and Co-host Keith Grandberry spoke with the pioneering figure behind the establishment of the Minority Business Enterprise (MBE) and the U.S. Government Black College Program, now known as the HBCU Program Robert J. Brown about the complexities of Black entrepreneurship, historical perspectives on civil rights, and his vision for the future of minority business enterprises.

Mr. Brown, who served as a special assistant to former President Richard Nixon, discussed his journey and the creation of minority business enterprises in the United States. He highlighted the challenges faced by Black entrepreneurs during his early career and the necessity of creating pathways for inclusion within the American free enterprise system.
Mr. Grandberry emphasized Mr. Brown’s extensive accomplishments and connections with key historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela. He acknowledged Mr. Brown’s efforts in rallying prominent Black leaders to support initiatives aimed at empowering minority communities economically.
The conversation also touched on the shifting political landscape, particularly regarding the historical role of Black Americans in the Republican Party during the civil rights movement. The hosts emphasized the importance of representation and inclusion in political and economic spheres.
