SMAC grants published April 16, 2025 – West Central Tribune


The Southwest Minnesota Arts Council serves 18 counties as a source of funds and technical assistance to enable local organizations, educational institutions and individuals to sponsor and/or create and promote arts in their communities. The office and gallery are at 509 West Main Street in Marshall. They are open 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. weekdays. Below are the grant deadlines for the 2022-23 fiscal year.

Open office support: second Tuesday of the month, between 10 a.m.and 2 p.m., in-person, for assistance with any grant-related questions. Or schedule an appointment with the grants administrator.

Webinars: All grants have a grant-writing webinar which is listed with each grant below. Each will be recorded and is available on the website.

The artist equity grants provide up to $4,000 to aid Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and other artists of color with projects that will advance their skills and artistic careers. Receiving a grant were:

Shyanna Johnson, of Redwood Falls, $3,865 for purchasing a new work table, tools and supplies for traditional beading.

Kay Williams, of Redwood Falls, $3,573 for workspace storage and supplies for traditional beading.

The Arts in the Schools provides up to $4,000 for artist residencies or $2,500 for field trips, juried exhibits, or prepackaged theater. Area schools receiving grants were:

KMS Public Schools, of Kerkhoven, $1,250 for high school art students to visit the Walker Art Center and Minneapolis Sculpture Garden in May 2025.

Quick support for organizations

Quick Support for Organizations grants provide an organization with up to $2,500 for activities such as planning for an Art Legacy project, strategic planning or board training, costs to apply for 501(c)(3) status, small equipment purchases, or small arts projects. These grants are still open for applications, deadlines are the first of the month by 4:30 p.m. through April.

Redwood Area Arts, $2,500 for working with consultants to rebrand the organization’s physical location after its name change.

Art Study Opportunity for Youth grants up to $500 in funding for students in entering grades 5-12 for an enrichment camp or specialty study. Receiving grants were:

Addison Kainz, of Tracy, $500 for studying with professional dancers at Balleraena Dance Studio for two weeks in July 2025. While there, she hopes to collaborate with Laura Van Riper on a choreography piece.
