Lavaille Lavette, author and social entrepreneur, is leading a $1 billion fund to advance African storytelling. Pan-African Film Fund According to a press release, the Pan-African Film Fund was created to provide capital for Africa’s film, television, and immersive media industries by supporting content production, infrastructure, and distribution “through equity, quasi-equity and structured financing solutions.” The fund is an arm of the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA), which is the impact investment subsidiary of the Pan-African multilateral financial institution Afreximbank. Lavette is a New York Times best-selling publisher, editor, and author with a career that also encompasses content creation, production, and social entrepreneurship, her bio reads. Before joining the Pan-African Film Fund as CEO, she co-founded The Roux, a convenience store and gas station with an initiative that promotes literacy. The Pan-African Film Fund launched in 2025 under Afreximbank’s Creative Africa Nexus program, looking to scale economic growth, job creation, and cultural influence, according to the release. Afreximbank appointed One Street Studios as co-general partner of the fund. According to the press release, One Street Studios will contribute financing, development, and production of content that uplifts African-owned narratives. Lavette also serves as managing partner at One Street Studios/JVL Media. “Africa’s creative industries are entering a defining moment. Through the Pan-African Film Fund, we will mobilise long-term capital that supports creators, strengthens production capacity, and builds sustainable global distribution pathways for African storytelling,” Lavette said in the press release. George Elombi, president and chairman of the board of directors of Afreximbank, commented: “The partnership between FEDA and One Street Studios is most timely and strategic as it serves as a crucial bridge uniting the diaspora with geographic Africa, but also empowers our creative economy to take full ownership of our narratives, enabling us to produce what we consume and consume what we produce.” The Pan-African Film Fund will be supported by partnerships with studios, streaming platforms, and distributors, per the release.
