BeyGOOD Puts $25K Behind Getting Kids Onto HBCU Campuses Early
Beyoncé's foundation is investing in Camp HBCYouth so more young kids can visit college campuses, at a lower cost to families.
Beyoncé's BeyGOOD Foundation is sending $25,000 to Camp HBCYouth, a summer camp that brings kids in kindergarten through fifth grade onto HBCU campuses long before they apply anywhere, Black Enterprise reports, citing AFROTECH. Spelman alum Reagan Fresnel and Morehouse alum Brian Wright started the camp in 2021, and the outlet says it has reached about 2,000 children so far. The seven-week program mixes reading, STEAM lessons, culture, wellness and sports with campus tours and time spent around current college students. Partner schools include Spelman, Morehouse, Clark Atlanta, Tennessee State and Morgan State, and the team wants to add Texas Southern in Houston next. Per the report, the money goes three ways: more campers, more paid jobs for HBCU students, and lower costs for families. BeyGOOD also told Atlanta Daily World that 95% of campers said they want to attend an HBCU. The money lesson: small, targeted grants can buy real reach when a program already has partners and proof. Signups for next summer open Nov. 9.
