The Art of Delegation by Charles C. Malone, if I’m being honest before I ever read a book I always check the reviews and other websites to see if they have any articles on the books.

1. Let’s start with Time
– This book talks about how delegating will free up some of your time
– Which is very true, it how someone can have the same 24 hours in a day but still get 10 times more than you
– Because they have the skills of delegation

A great example in this book:
– Is the Entrepreneur that is just getting started and has 5 hats to wear
– He is the CEO, CFO, Marketing Manager, Secretary, and even the accountant
– But as he grows he will have to actually hire people into those positions because he won’t be able to keep up with it

2. Ego Vs Delegation
– It’s the idea that some people don’t want to delegate because they think they are the best and only person for a job
– And hiring someone would just slow them down, because how are they supposed to teach them everything they learned in years in just a few days

The truth is this:
– There are many people that can do a better job than you can in a certain area
– When you delegate the goal is to make that person better than you are

3. Delegation is a Refreshing
– You ever had a job and you were brand new to it
– And the company had been doing something the same way for years
– And when you go, you’re like theirs a better way to do this ( see you can take this short cut )

For example:
– I had a job at town sports HQ and the company was acquiring customers and our job was to input them into the system, by having an excel sheet and spending hours just copy and pasting
– I said why not just buy a program to this entire job for you instead of hiring us
– And there was no answer

PE: Later they asked me to join the team full time, and I could never see myself working for a company, that keeps obsolete jobs for the sake of it.

4. Leaders Lead and Managers Manage
– However, though a lot of growing up seeing bad examples of leaders
– Where employees hate the person they work for, where movies show us terrible leaders that are arrogant
– And for some of us, we don’t really want to be like that

However:
– When I think of an example of a good leader I see Warren Buffer, someone that people seem to love working for and being apart of that team
– And also Sam Walton who lead his people to create a 300Billion dollar company ( Walmart )
– But the only way to accomplish things that big is to do your job and lead people correctly, and empower your manager to manage and your employees to know that it all depends on them

Tip: I love that in this book, he said the job of a leader is to empower their employees and build trust with them.

5. Trust and Verify
– The idea is that you can trust someone, but you also need to verify the work to make sure that it was done to good standard, and so on
– And if it was, you want to let that person know and thank them, and it wasn’t you always want to let the person know and how to improve

For example:
– I made a mistake once by starting a little business with a friend of mine, I had to manage everything and do all the work Because I trusted him
– But I was never verifying everything that was going on
– Turns out that he wasn’t good at all for the job he was doing, and the business ended up in trouble ( today he owes me some money, but has no way to pay it ) – trust and verify

Bonus: start small
Tip: a more complete book, the entrepreneur rollercoaster.
