The BOLD Market celebrates Huntsville Black-owned businesses in honor of Black Business Month

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) – In honor of Black Business Month, CEO of the organizations BOLD Huntsville and Huntsville Black-Owned Businesses, Kanique Mighty-Nugent, is hosting her first ever BOLD Market event on Sunday, August 10th.

She joined 48 Now to share more about The BOLD Market event, which will be a vibrant event celebrating Black Business Month through culture, entrepreneurship, and community connection.

This high-energy event will feature local Black-owned vendors and creators, live music and entertainment, food trucks, fashion, tech and wellness, and a vibrant celebration of community, networking, and entrepreneurship. There will be something there for the whole family to enjoy!

BOLD Huntsville started in January 2025, and it stands for “Black Owned Leadership Development.”

Mighty-Nugent said she wanted to create this organization as a way to bring Black business owners together.

“We really just wanted to bring the Black business community together so that we could offer them resources. We also have events on a monthly basis where we actually come together and hang out and talk business,” Mighty-Nugent said.

Mighty-Nugent’s other organization, Huntsville Black-Owned Businesses, is an online directory she created where people can search for Black-owned businesses so they can go and patronize those businesses. She said there are a variety of Black-owned services and products that people can find through the directory.

“We really wanted to create a platform where we’re showcasing them,” Mighty-Nugent said.

“We’re really trying to provide for these businesses so they can prosper, put money in their pockets, and to help them provide legacy for their families.”

Through Mighty-Nugent’s BOLD Huntsville and Huntsville Black-Owned Businesses organizations she hosts webinars on several topics that will help businesses succeed such as webinars on social media marketing and grant writing.

“That’s some of the things Black businesses really want to learn how to do well on, how to market themselves on social media, or how to get those grants because some people know that getting funding for Black businesses can be a bit difficult so if they can learn how to submit those grant requests well, they can make themselves bankable. That will help them get the funding they need for their businesses,” Mighty-Nugent said.

They also host coworking sessions where business owners get together to learn from one another, help each other out, and share ideas with one another. They even host mixers for different business owners to mingle together.

This year will be the first year that the BOLD Market event is being held and there will be several Black-owned vendors there including someone with a 360 photobooth, a waist beads business, jewelry sellers, and people selling journals, T-shirts, and artwork.

There will also be a business selling vegan food at the event and live music and performers including a performance from a Huntsville dance group, the Dazzlin’ Dymes.

There will even be kid entrepreneurs at the event who will be selling various items such as body butters and soap.

Mighty-Nugent said this event will be a one-stop shop to see and support a variety of different Huntsville Black-owned businesses and make the community aware that these businesses exist.

“I’m hoping that they see that we can build community and that we can support one another. These businesses are here in Huntsville, and this is one way to show people the different businesses they can patronize,” Mighty-Nugent said.

“You don’t have to run to the big box store. You can patronize a Black-owned business right here in Huntsville, and you can see a business that may have started off really small, grow into something amazing and huge in the community. A dollar does matter, a dollar does count, and it can help sow a seed into a business, so that’s what I’m really hoping that’s what the community will gain from it and that they will support.”

Mighty-Nugent also wants this to be an opportunity for the younger generation to be inspired to one day pursue their own business.

“The generation that’s coming up, when they see these businesses stepping out there and doing this, it will plant a seed in their mind that could be me in the future,” Mighty-Nugent said.

Mighty-Nugent wanted to host The BOLD Market event during Black Business Month because this was a time all eyes would be on Black-owned businesses, so she wanted to bring them all together in one space so they can be showcased and supported.

“While all eyes are looking at businesses during this month because this is really the time to celebrate Black businesses, I think this will be the ideal time to have that because people are focusing on where they can find these Black businesses and here is an event that you can come to where you can support these Black businesses, so definitely come out. This is the time, while all eyes are on Black businesses to come out and support them,” Mighty-Nugent said.

The BOLD Market is raising money towards a business support grant. People can donate to this support grant and Mighty-Nugent said their goal is to raise at least $500 for this grant and at the end of The BOLD Market event, they want to give away to support a small Black-owned business to help them and invest in their success and journey.

“The real reason we are doing this is just to build community, to support one another, because we cannot do this on our own,” Mighty-Nugent said.

“No business has gotten to where it is on its own. Every business started out small and based on community. It started out with friends and family coming out and supporting that business and helping it to grow. We’re hoping that through this event, we can support these businesses and see them grow into some amazing large businesses that support this community.”

If you’re in the Huntsville area, you don’t want to miss out on The BOLD Market at the Orion Amphitheater on Sunday, August 10th from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. It’s free, it’s family-friendly, and it’s all about community, culture, and supporting Black entrepreneurs!
