Being a Graphic Designer or any type of Creative Professional is hard sometimes because of the compromises you have to make if you don’t want to be a starving artist. The hardest thing about being creative sometimes is knowing where to draw the line.

When you are working for yourself as a creative professional or a creative entrepreneur, you have more flexibility and control over your work. You also have more of a sense of ownership.

One of the things that was really disappointing as a Graphic Designer was feeling no sense of ownership over the work and being made to feel like I had to compromise on what was best for the project, due to internal politics or what a client wanted over what the end user or consumer wanted.

When you work for someone else, especially as a graphic designer, the client or employer is the decision maker, and this sometimes means they will make decisions that don’t line up with the goals of the project. But because you are an employee, even in a situation where you or the team know better, there is nothing you can do.

Part of the reason I became a creative entrepreneur was to put myself in a position where I’d have the leverage to walk away from things I don’t agree with. You can’t always do this in a creative business, but knowing that you have that freedom makes a huge difference in how you work.

In my graphic design career, there were constantly projects where the decision makers, actually were contradicting themselves or didn’t know what they wanted. Not all the time, but in my career as a graphic designer I’d say that if it wasn’t happening once in 30 days it was a minor miracle.

This is not something I say to discourage you from pursuing a graphic design career, I just want to be honest about some of the things you may experience one day working as a graphic designer.
