Ralph Lauren celebrates 20 years of sponsoring the U.S. Open this year, and one of Broomfield’s favorite outfits at the tournament was from the brand’s new Oak Bluffs collection. “I was blown away by the visuals of the history of Oak Bluff. I used to go to Martha’s Vineyard in the summer when I was younger, and I remember feeling such a warm sense of community there and just being able to see the collection and start learning more about Oak Bluffs, it really opened my eye to the fact that it became this safe haven for Black entrepreneurs and intellectuals. It has so much historical significance, and I think it was amazing for them to pay homage to that location, but also to showcase the HBCUs like Spelman and Morehouse because they have such a rich history.”

“Obviously, it’s a beautiful collection,” she adds, “but there’s so much meaning behind it, and I wanted to be able to showcase that on a bigger scale.”

Andrea Iyamah

“She’s a Canadian Nigerian designer and I’m Canadian myself, so I felt a little bit of a connection there. And she really has a unique style. She plays with a lot of different pleats and florals, and it’s very, very African inspired, and she really, really makes sure that you feel that when you’re wearing the pieces. I love the geometry of how that outfit was—I think it really snatched my waist in, and I love a good Canadian tuxedo. The denim on denim was a moment, and I loved it.”

Harbison Studio

“Charles Harbison’s background with lines and architecture really shows in his clothing; the fit and the tailoring was so, so amazing. I remember putting it on and I felt like he should have been showcased at the Met this year for fine tailoring! I hope that using my platform and other people using your platforms to showcase these designers, give them a chance to show their work on a bigger stage or a scale.”

Broomfield wore another Harbison Studio look last night. “I was trying to figure out what I wanted to wear for this suite. I know I wanted it to be a little bit more elevated, and when I saw the green dress, I knew that it was instantly a pop.”

She adds, “It was so beautiful and it just felt very poetic and it just felt like individual. And I feel like that was the theme of my suite—it was embracing everybody’s individuality to come together and form this really beautiful night of Black women that are all extremely successful in their own rights and to share stories and empower each other.”

Telfar

“I was doing an interview on Black athletes that were competing at the U.S. Open; it was a story on Althea passing the torch to Serena who then passed the torch to these young players. And I wanted to make sure that I was also showcasing Black designers and Black brands there as well.”

She adds, “Funny enough, Telfar really came on my radar when Beyoncé popped out with a Telfar bag, and from there, the brand just absolutely took off. They’re very unique. They’re a street style brand that does things differently; they play with patterns and textures. even went into their flagship store here in New York just to kind of get the vibe of their new collection, and I just think it’s absolutely incredible. It’s very, very, very unique, and I was just really excited to wear it and show it off.”

Off-White

“When I saw this, I immediately thought of Dionne from Clueless. I love wearing Off-White because their new designer, Ib Kamara, is of Sierra Leonian descent. My boyfriend also is from Sierra Leone, so when we first were introduced to Off-White, we were able to go to this really intimate dinner and meet him in person, and I just so sat there and listened to them, share stories about their upbringing and having roots that lead back to West Africa. And ever since then, I’ve fallen in love with him as a designer. I go to a show every single year at his New York Fashion Week show, and I’m a huge fan, so I definitely wanted to be able to showcase some of his work.”
