Welcome to our clip of EYL, where hosts Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings sit down with the dynamic entrepreneur, April Showers. In this clip, April shares her incredible journey from South Central LA to becoming the founder of Afro Unicorn, a brand celebrating Black girl magic and the entrepreneurial spirit.

April’s entrepreneurial journey began at the tender age of 14, driven by a passion for self-reliance and innovation. By age 19, she was already managing a team of PAs in the entertainment industry, demonstrating that her entrepreneurial spirit was more than just a phase; it was a calling. Over the years, April continued to build her business acumen, eventually leading her to own and operate a successful State Farm agency, which she has run for nearly 13 years, and secure a license as a real estate broker.

The inspiration for Afro Unicorn came from a friend’s repeated assertion that she was a “unicorn”—an extraordinary individual juggling multiple ventures and raising two honor roll students, Jesse and Christopher, as a single mother. Intrigued by the term, April researched and embraced the idea of unicorns being unique and mystical creatures. Discovering that available depictions didn’t resonate with her, she saw an opportunity and created Afro Unicorn, a brand that embodies the essence of Black girl magic and entrepreneurship.

April launched Afro Unicorn in 2019 with a simple yet powerful idea: to create apparel that represents and celebrates women of color. The brand quickly gained traction, catching the attention of celebrities like Tiffany Haddish, Sherri Shepherd, and Alicia Keys. These influential women resonated with the Afro Unicorn ethos and helped amplify its reach.

The pandemic in 2020 presented challenges, but April pivoted effectively by switching to a print-on-demand model. This change allowed her to meet growing customer demands for a variety of products, from notebooks to backpacks, all adorned with the Afro Unicorn design. Her focus on making Afro Unicorn accessible helped turn customers into walking billboards, spreading the brand’s message far and wide.

The turning point came when a video of a young girl wearing an Afro Unicorn shirt went viral, catching the attention of Walmart. Impressed by the public’s response, Walmart reached out to April, leading to a licensing partnership for Afro Unicorn party supplies.

This clip delves deep into April Showers’ remarkable story, her entrepreneurial wisdom, and how she turned Afro Unicorn into a movement that resonates with countless women around the world. Join us in celebrating April’s journey and the power of believing in oneself.
