The Last Confederate Statue in Richmond, VA Has Been Removed After 130 Years

The General A.P. Hill’s statue was just added to the list of confederate statues that were removed from the city, which includes monuments of Gen. Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. 

“Over two years ago, Richmond was home to more confederate statues than any city in the United States. Collectively, we have closed that chapter. We now continue the work of being a more inclusive and welcoming place where ALL belong,” Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney tweeted.

The statue sat on top of the general’s burial site. Circuit Court Judge David Eugene Cheek Sr. ruled that his remains be moved to Fairview Cemetery and the statue be moved to storage.

Back in 2020, a Virginia State law was passed that allowed localities to take down confederate statues and monuments. Black activists have been actively fighting to remove these Confederate leaders who promoted the enslavement and oppression of Black people.
