LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — The University of Louisville celebrated Black History Month on Thursday and the strides its made on campus.

For 50 years, the university has offered its Pan-African Studies program. Additionally, UofL’s African American Theater program is the first and only accredited graduate program of its kind in the country.

Several speakers were on hand for the event, including WDRB’s own Stephan Johnson. 

UofL President Dr. Kim Schatzel said there is still a lot of work to do to get more minority students graduating.

“Student success and inclusive student success is absolutely the priority that we have, we are not there yet,” Schatzel said. “We have a 62% 6-year graduate rate, and we have a completion gap between our eligible Black and Latinx students as well, and we will close that gap.”

Schatzel went on to say she thinks Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs, or DEI, are imperative to minority student success at UofL, and on other college campuses.
